Eugene Bernard Acham-Chen, late 1900s
“CHEN, Eugene, originally Ch’en Yu-jen (1878-1944),
Chinese political leader, born in Trinidad, British West Indies, and
educated in London. After practising law for a number of years in Trinidad;
he moved to China. He edited and managed the Peking Gazette from 1914-1916,
when he was charged with publishing anti-Japanese articles and sentenced to
prison. Released in 1918, he resumed his editorial activities in northern
China. Later, he became a confidant and political secretary of Sun-Yat-sen,
the Chinese revolutionary leader. He was appointed acting minister for
foreign affairs of the Chinese government in 1926, and foreign minister in
1927. Although he was frequently at odds with the Kuomingtang leadership,
he served three additional terms as foreign minister between 1931-1938.”
