A
promising young cellist in the international music scene, Hong Kong born
CYL Lee was awarded bronze medal at New York's Naumberg
International Cello Competition in year 2001, and 'Paul Streit Prize' at
the 55th Geneva International Music Competition in year 2000. He has
performed extensively in America, Europe, and Asia, and has appeared in
major concert venues including New York Lincoln Center's Alice Tully
Hall, Italy's Accademia Chigiana, Madrid's Auditorio Nacional, Marlboro
Music Festival, Geneva's Batiment des Forces Motrice, Beijing's Chun
Shan Music Hall, and Hong Kong City Hall. In October 2001, CYL was
invited by Vladimir Spivakov Foundation to perform at the televised
concert at the Kremlin in Moscow, and in 2002-2003, CYL is
scheduled to appear in numerous festivals and concerts in Europe and
Asia.

generous tone', CYL has collaborated with numerous major artists
including cellist Mario Brunello, violinist Isadore Cohen, (a former
member of the Beaux Arts Trio), Hungarian pianist Peter Frankl, cellist
David Soyer of the Guarneri Quartet, and Croatian French horn virtuoso
Radovan Vlatkovic.

Kong terrestrials TVB and ATV have broadcasted feature stories on CYL.
CYL was born
in Hong Kong to Singaporean father and Indonesian Chinese mother. CYL
began to play the cello at age nine encouraged by his pianist mother.
Following in the footsteps of his two elder sisters, he entered the
Juilliard School three years later studying with Ardyth Alton. While at
Juilliard, he made his orchestral solo debut at Lincoln Center with the
Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra, and was awarded
the Dora Roth Dornfeld Memorial Prize, the Lado, Inc. Prize, and the
Edward John Noble Foundation Prize by the Juilliard faculty. He also won
1st prizes at the 3rd Olga Koussevitsky Competition in New York, where
he was the youngest prizewinner, and the Concerto Soloist Competition of
Philadelphia. In 1991, he was invited to the Gregor Piatigorsky
International Seminar for Cellists as one of the youngest participants,
working closely with the American cellist Lynn Harrell.
CYL graduated
from Harvard University with a Bachelor in Economics and has worked as a
management strategy consultant for one year. In 1998, he graduated from
New England Conservatory of Music with a Master's Degree in Music where
he studied with cellist Laurence Lesser. Since then, he has spent time
under the tutelage of Swedish cellist and conductor Frans Helmerson in
Spain and Germany, while also receiving tremendous guidance and support
from Bernard Greenhouse, founding member of the Beaux Arts Trio. He
currently resides in Cologne, Germany while his family lives in Hong
Kong. |
